FAQs

What is the difference between a 'heavy' bottle and a normal bottle?

The 'heavy' style of bottle weighs more than our normal bottles. Due to this increased weight, they are often more expensive per bottle than the lighter styles.

What is the difference between the Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Hock styles of bottles?

Bordeaux bottles are characterized by their straight sides and tall shoulders. Burgundy bottles have gently sloped shoulders. They are sturdy bottles with a slightly wider girth. Hock bottles, sometimes referred to as 'California Hock' are tall and slim, however they have gently sloping shoulders similar to a Burgundy. This style originated in the Rhine Valley in Germany. Champagne bottles have thick glass, gently sloping shoulders and a deep punt to accomodate the high pressure inside the bottle.

What is the indentation at the bottom of the wine bottle for?
Historically, the indentation, called a punt, was a technique used by glass blowers to push the seam of the glass upwards so that the bottle sat flat. Nowadays, most bottles are machine made and no longer require a punt, however many wine bottles are still made with them to follow in the winemaking tradition. Some people do say that the punt assists in sediment collection as wines age. The punt does play an important role in the distribution of carbonation in sparkling wines such as champagne.
